Note: You may have read this before…it was originally posted back in June of 2015. I submitted it for publication elsewhere but it didn’t make the cut. It’s back home now on my lil blog!
“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what Gods will is, His good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2 (NIV)
My screams echoed inside the dark plastic tube, I had no idea what to expect. My mind was shouting, “This is a mistake!” I prayed my body wouldn’t suffer from my reckless decision.
Then my ears picked up another sound, a sweet melody. The moment now etched forever in my memory. It was Elly, my teenaged granddaughter laughing at my terror thrilled screeching. She had convinced me to ride a water slide with her. We were whipping through sharp curves on a huge rubber tube built for two, my granny-body protesting all the while. All of a sudden we burst into the sunlight and my heart felt renewed and rejuvenated! In those few seconds I rediscovered my childlike innocence. A time before life got twisted and brutal. A time when my faith was carefree and pure. I didn’t want that feeling of…God alive in me…to end!
I realized afresh how I have moments like this while reading God’s living word and, on my knees in prayer. It’s vital that we recharge our spiritual being. We must set aside time, with hearts open and vulnerable, to commune with our Creator God. This is where you find soul drenching renewal.
So often we focus only on the slippery slopes of fear or, dark tunnels of the unknown, consumed with surviving the ride. We kowtow to the world and miss the cleansing breath of God’s whispers. We miss precious moments of childlike abandon and joyous sights and sounds. In conforming to the strictures of the world we lose our freedom in Christ. But Jesus tells us, “In this world you will have trouble, but take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Take heart loved ones! Jesus has already overcome our twists and turns! The rapid pace of life is Satan’s tool to keep us from time with God. But it’s not too late, start today, find a moment with God and the Bible. “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Only when you abide in Him will you be able too, “test and approve what Gods will is.” You can absolutely trust it’s “good, pleasing and perfect.”
There was no dignity as Elly and I landed in the safety of the shallow pool below. We were tossed from the tube, laughing, flailing, and sputtering as we stood to exit the area. I survived!
In life we will have unknowns and curves. But like the shallow pool caught us at the end, so God will catch you. He’ll straighten your curves, still your fears, and you’ll burst from the darkness into SonLight.
